Dennis Barton is the producer and creative force behind skylab2000 . Recently, he has been joined by two different keyboardists, David E, or Stuart of Bassland.
There are always vocalists who perform also, and you never know what else will turn up in a show. They have had trombonists, rappers, other instrumentalists, and even fire breathers! You will never know what to expect at one of their performances.
skylab2000 is known for its diversity of sound and hard-hitting beats. They perform a live P.A. show letting loose "acid breaks, funky beats, hard techno and driving trance". In fact, one of the last tracks they performed at Phantasm was a drum and base sequence that simply drove the crowd wild!
A Quick Little Chit Chat With skylab2000 :
Brad : How long have you been producing and how did you all meet?
skylab2000 : We have been performing since 1996. Basically we met through friends of each other's friends, that sort of thing.
Brad : Where did the name "skylab2000 " come from and where did you get your start in "the scene"?
skylab2000 : It is just a spin off of Dennis' previous group, which has been reformatted. We started primarily in the L.A. underground party scene and have just gone on from there. Our home is just outside of L.A.
Brad : What styles of music have influenced you throughout the years and what artists, DJs, producers do you listen too?
skylab2000 : A variety of rock, blues, plus more... I'm not sure all those musical styles are discernible in our music, but they did have some effect. Biggest influences in dance music at first were Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire, then Acen, Hardfloor, Orbital.. Some of our favorites are Taylor, Carl Cox, Sandra Collins, KGB, Grant Plant, BBC (LA), J-Luv, Shorty, Bobble, Little Jen.
Brad : Do you still get around to enjoying parties yourself, or do you just play at them now?
skylab2000 : We still enjoy the party scene and try to attend them when we can. After we play, Christina and I [Dennis] ALWAYS hang out at parties.
Brad : What is the strangest thing that has ever happened to you during a performance?
skylab2000 : One time, a naked guy grabbed our keyboard. That was amusing!
Brad : How do you feel about your general success and how well you have been received? You are touring quite a bit and generally quite in demand as a headliner.
skylab2000 : We did not expect this to take off so well. Our following has developed much more than we thought it would and we hope they keep enjoying the music we make.
