LEVEL 27 CLOTHING has handpicked a collection of macabre up-and-coming artists including GOOD CHARLOTTE guitarist BILLY MARTIN for a special showcase opening Saturday, April 29 at StuART Gallery in Encino, CA (www.astuartgallery.com). The all-ages event will preview LEVEL 27 CLOTHING’s (www.Level27Online.com) new Fall line while revealing the haunted and stylized underbelly of such artists as Gris Grimly, Alex Pardee and Crab Scrambly and their dark images that defiantly embrace sweet, playful edges.
Relaunching in August, LEVEL 27 CLOTHING’s forthcoming line was inspired by the dark and playful imagery showcased in the Group Art Show. In fact, many of the exhibits’ artists contributed dressy and gothic designs to the forthcoming line of men’s suits, button-down shirts and screenprints, plus women’s capris and skirts. Some of the new creations will be on display in the gallery window, modeled by zombie corpses from a Hollywood special effects department.
In addition to the gothic appeal, MARTIN says “a lot of the kids who’ll come to this event are fashion conscious and into music, and not necessarily into any kind of hipster scene. This will definitely appeal to kids who like dark movies and surreal artwork.”
As a Group Art Show featured artist and owner of LEVEL 27 CLOTHING, MARTIN’s work has already been seen by millions in GOOD CHARLOTTE’s album art, T-shirts and website. “The reason I love music, art and movies is it’s an escape from real life. If you want real life, you can go outside and find it anywhere you look. I definitely think my music and my art go hand in hand. You start with nothing and come up with an idea that spawns in your head, building it up until it defines itself. It’s so cool to be able to think of something and put it down on paper. That’s the beauty of being an artist, to me. I love the satisfaction I feel after I finish a piece, when I can stand back and say ‘There it is, that’s what I was thinking about.’”
“I grew up thinking I was going to draw for Disney, work for Jim Hensen or create comic books,” says MARTIN. “Then at 14, I discovered the guitar and it just sort of took off from there and became a career. I just want people to see that I love art and understand that it’s a serious passion for me.” Looking ahead to the next GOOD CHARLOTTE album, he admits, “This is the longest break we’ve taken between records, so I’ve really been itching to get back into the studio.”
