"A producer gives to any dj a digital audio tape with a track or a few tracks that he's just finished. The dj cuts a dubplate of the track(s). In the night at the gig he drops the tunes in his set, and if the crowd gets hyped over them, he'll play the tune for some time to come. After it circulates on dubplate for a while, the tune is usually picked up by a record label, pressed, and released. Dubs is an essential part of the scene, the dubplate gives the dj a chance to personalize his set and set himself apart from others. "
