#1 Unsigned Artist on Myspace INGRID MICHAELSON
NEW YORK INDIE ARTIST INGRID MICHAELSON
BREAKS INTO BILLBOARD TOP 200
#1 UNSIGNED ARTIST ON MYSPACE’S CATCHY “THE WAY I AM” FEATURED IN OLD NAVY ADS
Quote:
New York independent artist Ingrid Michaelson’s debut Girls & Boys has broken into the Billboard Top 200 at #166 according to Nielsen Soundscan, making her the only independent artist currently on the charts. Michaelson, who self-releases on her own Cabin 24 Records with distribution through Original Signal / RED, has been on a rapid rise since her catchy single “The Way I Am” began airing in Old Navy’s “Fair Isle” sweater commercial ads nationwide in the end of September.
The independent success of Girls & Boys doesn’t end at #166, as the album is also currently the #3 Alternative New Artist Album, #5 Top New Artists Album, #28 Digital Album, and #44 Alternative Album in the country. Meanwhile, “The Way I Am” is the #27 Hot Digital Track and #31 Top Digital Song. Girls and Boys has also been climbing the iTunes charts since its release, with top ranks as: #2 Pop Album, #3 Pop Song (“The Way I Am”), #15 album for all genres, and #12 song for all genres. Additionally, Michaelson’s performance on Last Call With Carson Daly was YouTube’s most watched music video and her name and lyrics were four of the top 50 searches on Google last week.
If Ingrid Michaelson’s name isn’t immediately familiar, her music certainly is. After being discovered via her MySpace page, she first gained attention when four of her songs were used last season on the ABC hit drama “Grey’s Anatomy.” “Keep Breathing” played over the final minutes of last season’s finale, making her the third season’s most-played indie artist. The plays garnered Michaelson attention from Good Morning America, The Wall Street Journal, NPR’s Talk of the Nation, and moved the Philadelphia Inquirer to say, “Who needs radio play? Unsigned singer Ingrid Michaelson found fame when her song "Keep Breathing" was featured on the finale of Grey's Anatomy. We don't know McDreamy from McSteamy, but we know a perfect pop artifact when we hear one.”
The country also noticed Michaelson’s music: the night the finale aired, her name and her lyrics were the #1 and #2 most-searched items on Google in the U.S. The song is the featured track on the “Grey’s Anatomy Season 3” soundtrack out now on Hollywood Records. Michaelson’s songs also been featured on the CW’s “One Tree Hill” and ABC Family’s “Kyle XY”.
