No more searching for Bobby Fischer

Bobby Fischer detained in Japan Former world chess champion to fight deportation to U.S. Japanese immigration authorities have detained former world chess champion Bobby Fischer, shown at right in this 1970 file photo, during match with Boris Spassky of the U.S.S.R. The Associated Press Updated: 5:19 p.m. ET July 19, 2004TOKYO - It wasn’t a smart move. After decades of evading the public eye and U.S. justice officials, former world champion Bobby Fischer — possibly the best and certainly the most eccentric chess player ever — has been taken into custody by Japanese immigration after allegedly trying to leave the country with an invalid passport. Fischer, 61, was detained at Narita Airport outside Tokyo while trying to board a Japan Airlines flight for the Philippines on Tuesday, according to friends and airport officials. The U.S. Embassy confirmed Fischer was detained. It was not immediately clear if Fischer would be extradited to the United States, where he is wanted for playing a 1992 chess match in the former Yugoslavia in violation of international sanctions. Japan and the United States have an extradition treaty. |

From everything I've read about Bobby Fisher the man is undeniably a jackass, although that's not terribly uncommon for the exceptionally brilliant. But being a jackass isn't exactly enough of a reason for the US Government to spend any energy trying to extradite him is it? It all comes down to him playing an illegal game of chess over a decade ago.
Aren't there bigger criminals out there we should be looking for? |

But it (sort of) falls under a white collar crime and also (sort of) falls under a war crime, as at the time, Americans were not supposed to be doing ANYTHING in Yugoslavia. So, I kind of agree that he needs to be 'brought to justice', in the sense that he did violate the existing laws and there needs to be a trial. I'm not for punishing him as much, but we do need to show that if you break the law and get caught, you get punished.
