Purple City affiliate DK continues the crew's barrage of Mixtapes with his release, “King Me”. 70’s funk permeates this album, and with Kanye offering his golden touch on “If Not Me Then Who?”, the production for this album is beyond what the normal mix tape might offer. Whether they have met in person or not, DK is a student of Jay-Z with an overall appreciation for the culture. As he rips, “…could bring Boom-Bap back to the radio” on “Classic Sh*t”, it is clear that he understands the history of the culture he embraces. This Baltimore MC isn’t shy about pronouncing his position in the game as he already claims to be the “greatest rapper alive.” Without famous guest appearances, DK is never outshined. DK embodies Jay-Z’s sonic flow from “Jigga What” on “Mercenary. Don’t let his influences make you think he is a carbon copy of the Def Jam President. DK has taken Jigga’s approach and made it all his own. Looking at this jewel from “The Corner”, “Still a slave to Dutch masters only”, it is clear his word play boasts a confidence and years of practice. King Me is more than a promising debut; it is declaration to the Rap game that a new King is coming. JIVE Magazine Rating: 4 out of 5
