Phat Kat’s second solo album and first via Look Records is an underground Hip-Hop classic. With nearly one third of the album’s production coming from the late great J Dilla, Carte Blanche represents one of Detroit’s original and most celebrated collaborations. Whether it’s the work of Dilla, Young RJ, Nick Speed, or Black Milk, Carte Blanche has some of the funkiest drum work to been seen on a Hip-Hop record outside of the Roots. With an up-tempo pace, Phat Kat seamlessly rattles off rhyme after rhyme. Not wanting to be out done, Phat Kat seems to be battling the beat.
An album that stresses the timelessness of Dilla and the determination of one of Detroit’s finest, Carte Blanche is a raw, story-driven adventure that reveals a multidimensional artist uncompromising both in content and in delivery.
