Finally out in theaters after film studios playing hot potato for years with what is probably the most disturbing movie to hit the silver screen, Rob Zombie’s long awaited House of 1,000 Corpses is here. The film starts off with a quite literal bang as a gas station robbery gets bloody. The same gas station just happens to also have a museum of oddities, with a “murder ride” which details some of America’s worst murderers. The movie starts rolling when a pair of couples visits this gas station, blood being freshly mopped up when they arrive and learn of a Dr. Satan, a local murder legend.
After they pick up the insane hitchhiker, Baby Firefly (Sheri Moon, Rob Zombie’s main squeeze and the Living Dead Girl) and go to investigate the tree where Dr. Satan was hung, the movie begins to delve into the minds of a house of lunatics. Grisly scenes of gore, satanic rituals, and corpses galore mark this movie.
The cinematography of this movie gives it a very surreal feel, as scenes are joined by snippets of mutilated corpses. The best way to explain this movie would be to call it a Faces of Death movie with a plot, done in an over-the-top Natural Born Killers style. The movie manages to keep the shocks rolling until the end, as each twisted surprise sets the unholy bar higher for the next one. (though I had already figured out the clown’s role in the end)
If you’re looking to get scared or are just into seeing psychotic stuff, this is what you’re looking for. Sensitive people not admitted without blindfold and earplugs. Everything in this movie was made to get under your skin and it works great. It’s a hell of a film and will likely become a cult classic.
